Context: The For Freedom Museum is now 10 years old. This remarkable museum is situated in the picturesque little village of Ramskapelle (Knokke-Heist) and focuses on the liberation of the Scheldt Estuary in the Second World War. The museum is a private initiative that enjoys the support of the municipality of Knokke-Heist. TripAdvisor (link) lists it as one of the 10 best museums in Belgium. As part of the commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of Belgium, the museum promoters were looking for a curator to create and nurture a theme-based exhibition.
Our work: The theme they chose was “Heroes of the North Sea – Fishermen and Mines”. AY developed an innovative scenography for the exhibit and provided support for the communication material. AY also monitored the project, from the initial concept proposal, right through to the final production. And to reinforce the impact of the separate exhibition, AY suggested working with the poet Geert Briers, who translated the theme of the show into a catchy poem.
Result: In the wake of an opening that was much appreciated by the press, a fresh new wind is now blowing through the Museum, with the prospect of new collaborative links. Work is also being done on an exhibition calendar and events programme as part of a multiyear plan. And the rising visitor figures provide a good reflection of this.
